Graduation Requirements

Graduation requirements differ from cohort to cohort. To view the requirements that pertain to your cohort, please select the relevant item from the menu.

Single Major [B.A. (Hons)] Please select the relevant cohort from below:


For Cohorts 2007 and after

at least 100MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules (include Tamil or Hindi language modules), which include the following:

  1. SN1101E    South Asia: People, Culture, Development

  2. SN4101      Approaches to South Asian Studies

  3. SN4102      Critical Debates in South Asian Studies

  4. a minimum of 44MCs of SN modules (including SN1101E).

  5. a maximum of ONE of the following "methods" modules*:

    (i) GE2225
    (ii) HY2241
    (iii) PS2102 or PS3257

    *Students are encouraged to read ONE of the recognised "methods" modules.

  6. a minimum of 60MCs at level-3000 or higher (excluding language modules)., with

    (a) a minimum of 40MCs at level-4000 or higher, including

    (i)SN4101
    (ii)SN4102

  7. a maximum of 2 level-5000 SN modules (subject to department's approval).

  8. a maximum of 8MCs of either Tamil or Hindi track language* modules, not both.

  9. SN4402 Honours Thesis/Project (15MCs) is optional.

Students intending to pursue Honours are encouraged to read ONE of the following recognised methods modules towards their SN requirements:

GE2225      Methods and Practices in Geography
HY2241       Why History? The 20th Century 1914-1989
PS3257       Political Inquiry

Modules with prerequisites:

SN2275       Tamil Studies I (requires a pass in at least GCE ‘AO’ level Tamil)
SN3275       Tamil Studies II (requires a pass in SN2275 Tamil Studies I)

  • To declare an Honours track, students must have completed 110MCs, including 60MCs in the Major, with a CAP of 3.5 and above.

  • To qualify for Honours Thesis/Project (15MCs), students must be on the Honours track. In order to obtain First Class Honours, students must achieve a CAP of 4.5 or higher AND at least an ‘A-‘ in the Honours Thesis/Project.

  • Students who do not attempt the Honours Thesis/Project will read level-4000 modules to fulfil the Honours Requirements.

  • Students may also read a level-4000 Independent Studies Module (5MCs). The level-4000 ISM carries a prerequisite of 100MCs completed, including 60MCs in the Major, with a minimum CAP of 3.5. It precludes the Honours Thesis/Project.

  • All level-4000 modules carry a general prerequisite of having completed 80MCs, including 28MCs in the Major, with a minimum CAP of 3.5 OR being on the Honours track. (Some level-4000 modules may have different prerequisites.)

For Cohorts 2003 to 2006 (w.e.f. Sem 1 AY2009/10)

Pass at least 84MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules (including Tamil or Hindi language modules), which includes the following:

  1. SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Development
  2. SN4101 Approaches to South Asian Studies
  3. SN4102 Critical Debates in South Asian Studies
  4. a minimum of 20MCs of SN modules at level-4000 or higher
  5. a minimum of 48MCs at level-3000 or higher (excluding language modules), with
  6. a) a minimum of 7 modules (with at least 28MCs) at level-4000 or higher, including (i) SN4101 and (ii) SN4102

  7. a maximum of 2 level-5000 SN modules
  8. a maximum of 8MCs of either Tamil or Hindi track language* modules, not both.

*Language modules are optional.

Pass at least 60MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules (include Tamil or Hindi language modules), which include the following:

  1. SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Development

  2. a minimum of 40MCs of level-2000 and level-3000 SN modules.

  3. a minimum of 20MCs at level 3000 or higher (excluding language modules).

  4. maximum of 8MCs of either Tamil or Hindi track language* modules, not both.

*Language modules are optional.

 

For Cohorts 2001 to 2006

Pass at least 56 MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules (include Tamil or Hindi language modules), which include the following:

  1. SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Development.

  2. A minimum of 20MCs of level-3000 SN or SN-recognised modules (excluding language modules).

  3. A maximum of 8MCs of either Tamil or Hindi track language modules*, not both.

*Language modules are optional.

Second Major & Shared MajorPlease select the relevant cohort from below:

Second Major for Cohorts 2006 and after

Pass at least 48MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules (include Tamil of Hindi language modules), which include the following:

  1. SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Development.

  2. a minimum of  16MCs at level-3000 (excluding language modules).

  3. a maximum of 8MCs of either Tamil or Hindi track language* modules, not both.

*Language modules are optional. 

Shared Major for Cohorts 2001 to 2006

Option 1

Pass at least 32MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules (include Tamil or Hindi language modules), which include the following:

  1. SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Development.

  2. a minimum of 12MCs of level-3000 SN or SN-recognised modules (excluding language modules), with at least 20MCs of level-3000 modules from both majors.

  3. a maximum of 8MCs of either Tamil or Hindi track language* modules, not both.

*Language modules are optional. 

Option 2

Pass at least 36MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules (include Tamil or Hindi language modules), which include the following:

  1. SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Development.

  2. a minimum of 12MCs of level-3000 SN or SN-recognised modules (excluding language modules), with at least 20MCs of level-3000 modules from both majors.

  3. a maximum of 8MCs of either Tamil or Hindi track language* modules, not both.

*Language modules are optional. 

Shared Major for cohorts 2002 to 2003

Pass at least 28MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules (include Tamil or Hindi language modules), which include the following:

  1. SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Development

  2. a minimum of 12MCs of level-3000 SN or SN-recognised modules (excluding language modules), with at least 20MCs of level-3000 modules from both majors.

  3. a maximum of 8MCs of either Tamil or Hindi track language* modules, not both.
