Welcome!
The Southeast Asian Studies Society (SEASS) is the student arm of the Southeast Asian Studies Programme, NUS (SEASP) and strives to be a contact point for individuals interested in all aspects of Southeast Asia and Southeast Asian Studies. Working together with the Programme, we organise activities to promote an interest in the region while serving as a contact network for staff, alumni, postgraduates, undergraduates and friends.
General information about SEASS happenings
Besides regular welcome teas and Programme get-togethers, the Society tries to organise and participate in expedition projects launched from Singapore into regional countries. In 2003, the Society organised an expedition under the Singapore International Foundation (SIF) to Pattani in southern Thailand. The Society’s mainstay event is Southeast Asia Night, an event celebrating the rich and diverse cultural heritage & artistic and performative traditions of the region. Southeast Asia Night maintains the Society and the Programme’s interest, commitment and expertise in Southeast Asia. Each Southeast Asia Night organised by the Society in collaboration with the Prog have brought together regional performers, staff and students from the Prog and its affiliated language classes with a diverse audience of professional academics, diplomats, students and people with an interest in the region.
The event celebrates the contemporary richness and diversity of the musical, aesthetic and performative traditions of the region as well as the diversity of Southeast Asian culinary. Southeast Asia 2001 featured a parade of ethnic and traditional costumes of Southeast Asian communities; Southeast Asia Night 2003 hosted the NUS Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble directed by Dr. Jan Mrazek from the Programme; and Southeast Asia Week 2006 showcased of contemporary musical and dance traditions from more regional countries than ever before.
Southeast Asia Week 2007 continues to expand the diversity of the region by showcasing film screenings and musical performances.
