The Regional Advantage

Our unique department forms the Southeast Asian studies core of this extraordinary region's dynamic academic hub, the National University of Singapore. While you study with us, the field is at your doorstep, and its experts just down the hall.

Our teaching staff specialize in the politics, histories, economies, cultures, religions and artistic traditions of the people sof Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Mynmar, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and East Timor, and actively engage in ground breaking research across the region and beyond.

We also house the Faculty's new Ph.D. programme in Comparative Asian Studies, as well as the Religious multidisciplinary minor programme and an excellent Summer School programme.

Meanwhile, our Archaeology Laboratory, housing some 500,000 artefacts excavated from Singapore and a few thousand more from other sites in Southeast Asia, is the single largest archaeological repository on the island.

At NUS, you will find even more respected Southeast Asianists in other departments like History, Sociology, Political Science, Geography, and Malay Studies. On campus, the Center for Language Studies (CLS) provides outstanding language training in Thai,Vietnamese, Bahasa Indonesia and Malay. Last but not least, the eminent Asia Research Institute and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) are mere campus shuttle rides away.

Come join us at the crossroads of the world!
