Degree Requirements

Mode of Teaching 3-hour seminar-style

  • Classes are conducted in the evenings (Monday to Friday) from 6:30pm to 9:30pm.
  • Classes for each module are held once a week over a period of 13 weeks (excluding final examinations, if applicable).
Mode of Study Full-Time or Part-Time

  • International students on student visa must be enrolled full-time.
  • Students residing in Singapore may enroll for part-time study.
Duration of Degree Full-Time
  • Requires at least 1 year (2 semesters) to complete the degree.
  • Maximum duration allowed: Three (3) years

Part-Time
  • Requires at least 2 years (4 semesters) to complete the degree.
  • Maximum duration allowed: Four (4) years.

 

Coursework Requirements Complete and pass at least ten (10) modules or 40 modular credits (MCs) which include:

  • One (1) required module:
    • SE5151 Approaches to the Study of Southeast Asia (4 MCs)

  • Nine (9) elective modules, of which:
    • A maximum of 2 modules (equivalent to 10 MCs) may be at level 4000
    • The remaining 7 modules (equivalent to 28 MCs) must be at level 5000 or 6000

  • Up to five (5) modules from the pre-approved list of modules offered by other departments/faculties may be read as elective modules

Optional: SE5201 Supervised Research Project (8 MCs) is available to select students.
English Language Requirement
  • Some students may be required to take the Diagnostic English Test (DET) to determine English proficiency. (Selected students will be notified in their offer of admission letter.)

  • Depending on their DET results, students may be required to take a Graduate English module(s) or be exempted from taking the module(s) altogether.

  • Students who are required to take the Graduate English Module(s) must obtain at least a 'C' grade in the module(s) at intermediate level.

  • Graduate English modules are not counted towards the 40 MCs required for the M.A. degree coursework requirements.
Workload Per Semester Full-Time
  • Maximum: 24 MCs (or 6 modules)
  • Minimum: 12 MCs (or 3 modules)

Part-Time
  • Maximum: 12 MCs (or 3 modules)
  • Minimum: 4 MCs (or 1 module)
Minimum Grade Requirements
  • Students whose Cumulative Average Point (CAP) falls below 3.00 (but ≥ 2.50) in any semester will be issued an academic warning.

  • Students whose Cumulative Average Point (CAP) falls below 3.00 for 2 consecutive semesters will be placed on probation.

  • Students whose Cumulative Average Point (CAP) falls below 3.00 for the third consecutive semester will be issued a letter of dismissal and denied re-admission.

  • Students whose Cumulative Average Point (CAP) falls below 2.50 in any semester will be placed on probation.

  • Students whose Cumulative Average Point (CAP) falls below 2.50 for 2 consecutive semesters will be issued a letter of dismissal.
Award of Degree A student will be recommended for award of degree if he/she has met the following requirements:

  • Complete and passed ten (10) modules (refer to coursework requirements above)
  • Obtained a minimum Cumulative Average Point (CAP) of 3.00;
  • Has not failed more than two modules;
  • Where applicable, obtained at least grade 'C' in Graduate English Module(s) (refer to English language requirement above)
