Gavin Jones

Professor Gavin Jones is Director of the JY Pillay Comparative Asia Research Centre, and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Sociology. After receiving his PhD from the Australian National University in 1966, Professor Jones worked with the Population Council in New York, Thailand and Indonesia before returning to the Australian National University, where he worked for 28 years. His 30 authored or edited books and monographs include Marriage and Divorce in Islamic Southeast Asia (Singapore: OUP, 1994), and a volume co-edited with Mike Douglass on Mega-urban Regions in Pacific Asia: Urban Dynamics in a Global Era (NUS Press, 2008). His recent research has focused on determinants of marriage and fertility, issues of ageing, and urbanization.
