On 12th July 2013, the Dean's Office, FASS, Sociology Society and the Department of Sociology co-organized an inaugural post-Commencement Graduation Dinner for their graduating students. That evening was a special occasion in the life of the Sociology graduands as it celebrated their transition into an important new phase of life and allowed them to spend a memorable evening together as the NUS Sociology Class of 2013 cohort.
This event attracted around 90 guests, including graduands, their loved ones, as well as Faculty members. Graduands who attended the dinner were warmly welcomed with commencement gifts kindly sponsored by the Dean's Office and the Sociology department. An ensuing buffet-style dinner comprising 3 different food stations was then accompanied by a special guitar and singing performance delivered by 2 graduands, Stephanie and James. They belted out a list of songs, providing much quality entertainment for the night. The graduands even joined in towards the end of the evening, singing the mashup of classic tunes ‘Graduation’ and ‘Forever Young’.
A/P Paulin Straughan, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences was the guest of honour for the event. She spoke with glowing pride about the class of graduating students and the promise of their future. She encouraged the graduands to stay connected, keep ablaze the culture of excellence and service which has defined our alma mater for more than a century, and wished them all the very best in their future endeavours.
This memorable event provided graduands the precious chance to get together and interact with their peers as well as mentors one final time before heading off into working life. The graduands were able to mingle with the Professors informally and take numerous photos which will prove to be precious keepsakes down the road. In sum, the event acted as the perfect closure to an invaluable 4 years of the graduands’ lives in NUS Sociology.By Chong Huilin (President, Sociology Society) & Woo Wee Meng (NUS Sociology Class of 2013)
