Abstract:

Not too long ago people living in urban India had to wait for 8 years to get telephone service. This has changed in the last couple of decades. India today is adding 7 million telephones per month and its economy is growing rapidly. Indians are now a confident lot and information and
communication technologies (ICT) have had a significant role to play in India's growth. India has become the leader in providing ICT and ICT-based services to the world. But Rural India is still languishing. Its 700 million people have not been a part of the positive changes ICT have brought to urban India.

Rural people want education, health care and employment opportunities. Early experiments have shown that ICT can become a critical tool in empowering rural India. This talk will focus on how emerging ICT can become an important part in making this possible. The talk highlights that while technological innovations are important, it is equally critical to have the pulse of the people while venturing into
technology development designed for rural India. Further, one must never forget that technology is merely a tool.
