The Executive Committee of the Society of Social Work Students would like to announce that we were officially recognized on 22 Feb 2007! Contrary to what you might be thinking, this society is not exactly new! Here is an outline of our history:
22 February 2007: Comprising 10 passionate Executive Committee members and over 60 members, we are finally officially recognized as SSWS!! Our vision is to be a dynamic society that continually supports the academic and professional development of social work students. Check out the Society’s website at www.ssws.wordpress.com for updates of upcoming events!
Celebrating the First Social Workers’ DayThe first ever Social Workers’ Day in the history of Singapore was celebrated on 20 Jan 2007 at the National Youth Council Park (NYCP). Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, was the Guest-of-Honour.
Altogether, over 100 NUS Social Work undergraduates helped in the Social Workers’ Day at the NYCP where we were actively involved in different aspects of the day’s activities from ushering to street outreach. YES! We wore placards and took to the streets of Orchard Road to engage and educate the public.
Apart from participating in Social Workers’ Day at NYCP, the committee also held an enriching 3-day event in NUS. It was aimed at increasing students’ awareness of the colorful and diverse profession of Social Work.
The theme of our event in school was “Uncover – the Silence, the Life, the Profession”. The event highlight was our mega-sized photo collage. Showcasing the activities and the vibrancy of the student and teaching body in the Department of Social Work, it was covered with quotes related to social work. It created a buzz all around and the crowd sure had fun looking at the quotes and ‘uncovering’ the ‘life’ beneath! Looking at the delighted faces that went away with a quote and some new knowledge of the profession made all the hard work worthwhile.
At a more personal level, it was especially heartening to see social work students band together to make our first major event in school such a resounding success. With many exciting SSWS events lined up in the future to come, the society certainly looks forward to your support and active participation!
