Students in the Student Exchange Programme are granted credit transfer but not grades transfer for satisfactorily completed modules mapped against equivalent modules at NUS. The rules below will operate to determine the maximum possible number of credits that you can bring back to NUS.
Rules
- At least 60% of the major must be graded and factored into the CAP.(2004 cohort onwards)
- Up to a maximum of 8 MCs may be read on SEP to fulfilled minor requirements. (Please note that modules with S/U option invoked cannot be used for the fulfillment of minor requirements)
- A residency requirement of at least 80 MCs read at NUS OR 50% of the required MCs for degree programme (higher of the two, based on graded modules factored into the CAP). (2004 cohort onwards)
- If the maximum MCs to be excluded from CAP has been exceeded, the student will have to make up by reading graded modules required for graduation.
Advanced placement credits and exemptions (APC) are usually granted to students for modules taken and passed prior to admission to NUS, for modules completed at another tertiary institution recognised by the University, or based on performance in placement tests set by the relevant Faculty/School.

For cohorts prior to 2007/08: Maximum ungraded MC allowed towards graduation requirements for students without APC
If you participate in SEP without any APC, you may accumulate up to a maximum of 32 MCs for one-semester SEP, or a maximum of 52 MCs for two-semester SEP of ungraded modules, to count towards graduation requirements subjected to the rules listed above within the regular candidature of your studies at NUS. Ungraded modules refer to modules whose grades are not factored into your CAP; this includes credits from overseas modules and other NUS modules taken on S/U basis (maximum of 12 MC).
An example will make this clearer. A student reading a B.A. (120 MCs) already has 8 MCs of modules graded ‘S’ and he went for one-semester SEP. The maximum possible number of MCs that he can transfer from his student exchange is calculated as below: (subjected to the maximum of 32 MCs)

Even though the balance is 40, but since the maximum is 32 MC and hence 32 will apply. |

The student is allowed to transfer 24 MCs of ungraded modules from his SEP. Please note that this number will drop if the student chooses to further exercise the last S/U option of 4 MC; reducing it to 20 MCs.

For cohorts prior to 2007/08: Maximum ungraded MC allowed towards graduation requirements for students with APC
If you participate in SEP without any APC, you may accumulate up to a maximum of 40 MCs of ungraded modules, within the regular candidature of your studies to count towards graduation requirements subjected to the rules listed above. There is an added component of APC in the calculation; taking another example.
A student reading a B.A. Hons (160 MCs); he already has 8 MCs of modules graded ‘S’. The maximum possible number of MCs that he can transfer from his student exchange is calculated as below: (subjected to the maximum of 40 MCs).

For cohorts 2007/08 onwards
There is no longer a limit on the maximum number of credits that you can transfer back to NUS from your SEP. However the rules indicated above still apply. Another example will make this clearer.

This is also a special notice to FASS students who have received APC and wish to only read a B.A. The maximum number of credits that the student can transfer from his SEP is only 8.

Other Advice
Students should consult the academic advisors and administrators of the respective departments on the minimum number of graded modules required in each of their majors.
