Associate Professor Deborah Shamoon teaches courses in modern Japanese literature, film, and popular culture. Prior to coming to NUS, she taught at the University of Notre Dame in the United States from 2006 to 2011. She received her PhD in Japanese literature and film from the University of California, Berkeley in 2005; MA in Japanese literature from the University of Washington, Seattle in 1999; and BA in Japanese from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1994.
Her research focuses on manga, anime, and film, with an emphasis on gender studies. Her work encompasses girls’ studies, or representations of the shojo. She is also interested in narratology and visual storytelling, particularly the construction of narrative in manga.
