Thai Programme
The Thai Programme aims to develop language proficiency and communicative structures using an integrated approach. Participants will acquire basic language and communication skills through participation in authentic communicative tasks. Through the exposure to the Thai language, participants will develop a general understanding of cultural and sociolinguistic aspects of the language.

THAI LANGUAGE LEARNING OUTCOMES
The Thai Language modules are designed and structured for the busy working professional who aspires to attain language mastery in the Thai Language.
Competencies achieved through attending the progressive modules are useful to building confidence so as to enable the individual to speak, understand and read basic syntax in the newly-acquired language focus.
Modules are designed in a structured and coherent manner, positioned from an adult perspective so that they closely address and match the adults’ learner’s quest for continuing education.

By the end of the course, students will have acquired basic communicative competencies useful in selected everyday situations and personal interactions, as well as vital strategies for language learning and language use.

Through the course, students will acquire basic linguistic and socio-cultural knowledge of the Thai language. Students will learn to acquire basic grammar and vocabulary to perform authentic communicative tasks in everyday situations.
They will be able to comprehend short listening texts, as well as express themselves in a variety of topical situations in daily life as well as during personal interactions. They will also gain an understanding of the target language society and observe how the language is used in the Thai context. They will acquire language learning and communication strategies that will support their language learning and language use.

A certificate of proficiency is awarded to participants who successfully complete Thai 3.

NO MINIMUM STANDARD REQUIRED FOR EMBARKING ON THE COURSE
The Thai Language modules are designed in progression from Level 1 to Level 3. This corresponds to a beginner in the language focus to roughly the equivalent of Beginner Level.

No specific pre-requisites are needed to enroll in Level 1. However, people who have intention to join mid-stage in the series of Levels are advised to conduct the placement test.

INCORPORATING ASSESSMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Each module of content comprises some 30 hours, incorporating assessments and assignments. For each of the levels from 1 to 3, there will be an assessment (pass or fail) set for students to gauge their ability and readiness to continue onto the next higher level in Thai Language.

Each level runs for 10 weeks, totalling 30 hours. The completion of 3 levels will require 30 weeks, totalling 90 hours.

Through the exposure to a variety of selected topics in relevant contexts and authentic communicative tasks, learners will be able to strengthen their knowledge of the target language and culture, as well as language learning strategies in order to be effective language learners and apply what they have learned in real life situations.

Course Content:
Students will be engaged in a variety of topics and tasks to achieve the following communicative functions:
1. Talking about a trip plan
2. Collecting information about cities
3. Asking for and giving advice on relevant information
4. Describing festivals and cultural practices
5. Giving opinions about festivals and cultural practices
6. Describing and expressing opinions about values and beliefs of celebrations
7. Discussing Thai cultural practices, customs and ways of life
8. Making critical comparisons about the target language culture and others, relating new insights to one’s local culture and identity

At the end of the course, participants will be able to: 1. Through the exposure to a variety of topics in real life contexts, media and authentic communicative tasks, learners will be able to deepen their knowledge and mastery of the Thai language and culture, as well as developing language learning strategies in order to be effective language learners and apply what they have learned in real life situations.

Course Content:
Students will be engaged in a variety of topics and tasks to achieve the following communicative functions:
1. Describing unforeseen incidents, suggesting solutions and making police reports
2. Describing and discussing accommodations, including relevant details, i.e. locations, prices, infrastructure, preferences, etc.
3. Talking about rental of vehicles when travelling overseas
4. Describing modes of transport in urban cities and expressing opinions
5. Talking about time management

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Communicate perspectives in Thai in a variety of topics relevant to daily life contexts using the learned and useful grammar and vocabulary.
