Summer/ Winter Programmes (SWP)

Introduction

Students can participate in the summer/ winter programmes (SWP) organised by NUS or our partner universities. This is a shorter version of SEP which allows students are able to experience independent life in a different culture for a few weeks.

Global Relations Office (GRO) recommends a number of SWP offered by reputable universities. Students may refer to http://www.nus.edu.sg/gro/summer-winter.php for more information and application procedures for each individual programme. Alternatively, students can self-source for SWP (i.e. not listed on GRO website) and apply directly with partner university.

For procedures on module mapping and credit transfer, please refer here

Credit Transfer Policy
To qualify for credit transfer, students should seek module mapping approval before they embark for SWP and pass the modules read at partner universities. Only credits will be transferred and credit transfer for FASS students is subjected to FASS MC Exchange Ratio. Students are expected to do their due diligence to calculate the equivalent number of credits their modules are worth and ensure they earn sufficient credits.

As stated on NUS Registrar’s Office website, students may transfer up to:

  1. Maximum of 10MCs for each summer programme (essentially 2 modules) and

  2. Maximum of 5MCs for each winter programme (essentially 1 module)

In addition, students can only transfer a total of 12MCs with fee waiver for up to 2 SWP during their course of study in NUS. Special Term tuition fees will be charged if students wish to transfer more than 12MCs or transfer credits from the third and subsequent SWP they participate. Please refer here for Special Term tuition fees payable.

Student Exchange Programme

Introduction

The Student Exchange Programme is an exciting opportunity to broaden your horizons, as well as to enhance your university studies or allow you to access greater research materials, deepen your research focus and perhaps learning from another supervisor. FASS has a varied and exciting overseas student exchange programme, where you can experience an enriching semester in a different country, enjoying all that a different educational, social and cultural setting has to offer. For international students who come here for an exchange semester, FASS also offers a vibrant cultural, educational and social experience for one and all.

Best of all, you will also be able to integrate and quantify your learning experiences as part of your undergraduate programme. You will be able to get credit transfer for the approved coursework you read while overseas under the exchange programme towards the fulfillment of your degree requirements.

Currently, NUS has exchange agreements with over 180 universities, for example, University of California campuses, Boston University, Peking University and King's College, University College London. In addition, FASS also has Faculty-level and Departmental-level exchanges with universities that have excellent programmes such as University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Stockholm School of Economics .

NUS Overseas College (NOC) Programme

Introduction

NUS Overseas College (NOC) programme aims to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of students. During the programme, students intern in a technology-based start-up company and take up courses part-time in reputable universities.

Eligibility

Students, regardless of major, can apply for the programme if they have completed four semesters of studies and obtained at least 70 - 80 MC. Students are also required to spend at least one regular semester in NUS upon their return from the programme. Please refer to application details here

If you wish to apply for the full year NOC, please do so in your 2nd year at NUS so that you will be able to head out in your 3rd year.

To qualify to read discipline modules, students must obtain a minimum CAP of 3.5 and above. They are to seek permission from the relevant departments on the mapping of discipline modules.

Limitations

Most students can use the internship and entrepreneurial modules only to fulfill either their Unrestricted Electives outside the Major requirements. GL and NM students will be able to use NOC modules to fulfill some of their major requirements. Please refer to your Graduation requirements for the maximum MCs that can be counted using NOC modules.

Cohort 2016 onwards: FASS students who have completed or are pursuing the year-long NOC programmes, are not allowed to read FASS internship module (FAS2551/FAS2552/FAS2553).  Students should therefore consider their options carefully before embarking on their internships.

Students should also take note of the Tuition Fee structure for semesters beyond Normal Candidature.
